IPH Emerald international health insurance for expats in Africa

IPH's Emerald plan is individual international health insurance with three benefit levels, published in US dollar and pound sterling schedules, with hospital, cancer and evacuation cover on every level. IPMIAfrica explains how the levels differ and how they fit Africa.

Last updated: 15 October 2026 · Reviewed by IPMIAfrica
In short: IPH Emerald is individual international health insurance with three levels, Core, Advance and Deluxe, published in US dollar and pound sterling schedules. All three give full-refund hospital, day-care, cancer and transplant cover and include evacuation and repatriation; Core leaves out outpatient treatment, which Advance and Deluxe add. It suits expats in Africa who want big-event cover and a clear choice over how much day-to-day care to add.
Key takeaways
  • Core excludes general and specialist outpatient treatment entirely; Advance and Deluxe cover it at full refund, subject to policy.
  • Hospice lifetime limits are $/£25,000 on Core, $/£30,000 on Advance and $/£50,000 on Deluxe, and do not reset annually.
  • Home nursing runs up to 4 weeks on Core, 8 weeks on Advance and 26 weeks on Deluxe.
  • Emergency evacuation, repatriation and local ambulance are published on every level, including the entry Core plan.
  • Area of cover, deductible, underwriting and pre-authorisation rules sit in the full policy, not the overview, so read it with the quote.

Three levels compared

IPH Emerald is international private medical insurance (IPMI) for individuals, positioned for private healthcare either abroad or in the country where you live. It has three benefit levels, Core, Advance and Deluxe, and the published plan overview (version 1.102024) compares them line by line.

How to read the ladder

The table rewards a careful read. Hospital, day-care, cancer and organ transplant cover are on a full-refund basis at every level, so the big-event protection does not change as you move up. What changes is the width of everything around it. Core leaves out general and specialist outpatient treatment entirely, which is the single biggest difference in the range; Advance and Deluxe add it. Deluxe then extends further, adding benefits including congenital-condition treatment, a stem-cell lifetime limit double that of Advance, and home nursing for up to 26 weeks rather than eight.

If your priority is protection against the expensive event and you are content to pay for GP and specialist visits yourself, Core does that job. If you want the plan to carry day-to-day treatment as well, start at Advance. Our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover explains how to make that call for your household.

Benefits, claims and limitations

Eligibility, area of cover, deductible, underwriting, exclusions and pre-authorisation rules are set out in the current full policy rather than the overview, so read the policy with the quote. Our pre-existing conditions guide explains the underwriting terms you are likely to find there.

Using IPH Emerald from Africa

IPH positions Emerald for private healthcare abroad or locally, which is the right framing for readers in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania and Mauritius. The area-of-cover options are not published in the overview this page is based on, so ask at quote which area applies and whether it includes the countries you might travel to for complex treatment. Our guide to regional versus worldwide cover explains why that answer matters more in some countries than others.

Emergency medical evacuation, medical repatriation and local ambulance cover are published on all three Emerald levels, including Core. For a member in a country where serious illness may mean a flight, that is the benefit to read most carefully in the full policy. Our evacuation guide sets out what good evacuation wording covers.

Schedules are published in US dollars and pounds sterling, so you can hold cover in whichever of those currencies you earn or save in. The full-refund basis for hospital, cancer and transplant care at every level means the entry plan is not a cut-down version of the expensive event cover; the difference between levels is the day-to-day and long-term care around it. IPMIAfrica quotes IPH Emerald alongside the rest of the market so that Core's outpatient gap and Deluxe's wider benefits show up as real price differences rather than guesswork.

Who IPH Emerald suits

IPH Emerald suits someone who wants full-refund hospital, cancer and transplant cover at every level, evacuation and repatriation included from the entry plan, and a clear three-step choice over how much outpatient and long-term care to add. The US dollar and pound sterling schedules suit members paid in either.

It is worth comparing alternatives if you want a published overall annual limit to compare at a glance, or benefits such as dental or maternity that the overview does not list. Browse all insurers we cover.
